about

With Adrian Quesada’s opening electric strum on a wah over Brownout drummer John Speice’s cymbals, “I Need You” sets a soulful call-and-response between two dejected lovers. Austin’s star rhythm and blues vocalists Tameca Jones and Dan Dyer team up to echo the forlorn words, “Love has gone away to stay” over a crying Grupo Fantasma horn section. Tameca and Dan's cover of the Temptation’s 1973 original is re-imagined as a ballad in the classic duet vein of Tammi Terrell and Marvin Gaye’s “You’re All I Need to Get By,” Peaches & Herb “Reunited,” and recently Jill Scott and Anthony Hamilton’s “So In Love.”

“I Need You”, produced by Grammy-winner Adrian Quesada, showcases the best of classic Motown with a new-school Austin spin. The song download is a preview to the live soul review, Heart of the City: A Celebration of Soul, featuring soul legend Bobby Patterson, Dan Dyer, Tameca Jones, Daniel James Leopold, and Nakia on February 15 at the historic Scottish Rite Theater. Tickets and sponsorships are available at simsfoundation.org/events/heart-of-the-city. Downloads of the song and ticket sales benefit the SIMS Foundation and help Austin musicians and their families get access to mental health and addiction treatment.
